This full-day tour from Amman will allow you to discover the often unnoticed historical highlights and beautiful landscape of Northern Jordan.

Your private driver will meet you in Amman at your hotel or another central location of your choice and drive you to the ancient Greek and Roman city of Jerash. Jerash is renowned worldwide for being one of the world’s best-preserved classical sites. Founded by Alexander the Great around 331 BC, the city — then called Gerasa — reached its peak after the Roman conquest in 63 BC, later becoming one of the 10 great Decapolis cities of the east.

The second stop is the nearby Ajloun Castle, a 12th-century fortress built by the forces of Saladin to defend against Crusader incursions. The hilltop edifice is a stunning example of medieval Arab-Islamic military architecture and was built to dominate three major passages into northwest Jordan. Go inside (own expense) and look around the towers, corridors, and small museum, absorbing the historical atmosphere and scenic views.

Proceed to visit another unique and different roman city Um Qais, where the Ottoman Governor’s House has been restored and opened as a museum. Um Qais offers beautiful views over the Northern Jordan Valley, the Sea of Galilee, and the Golan Heights. Finally, reconvene with your driver and return to Amman, where your tour ends with a drop-off at any central location of your choosing.

Itinerary

Day tour to Ajlun, Jerash & Um Qais

Pick up in Amman. Depart Amman to visit the Greco-Roman City of Jerash, also known as the City of the thousand columns. Jerash showcases the grandeur of Imperial Rome (and is sometimes referred to as the Pompeii of the East). It is considered one of the largest and most well preserved sites of Roman architecture in the World outside Italy. As the most pristine Decapolis City (meaning ten cities in Greek) in the modern world, Jerash’s prosperity can be admired in the colonnaded main street and lovely Oval Piazza. Visit the town of Ajlun with its fortress; one of the best preserved examples of medieval Arab military architecture in the entire Middle East, which was once governed by Saladin. Enjoy the magnificent view into the Jordan Valley. Proceed to visit Um Qais, a city rich with black basalt ruins of the Hellenistic era in which it was known as Gadara, a hilltop site in the north-west corner of Jordan with grand views of the Golan Heights and Lake Tiberius (the Sea of Galilee). Um Qais is also famous for being one of the ten cities that belonged to the Decapolis. Return to Amman. (No accommodation booked).
